Horror Decor
by Marc Fischer Author and Public Collectors Author
This zine documents five years of Halloween decoration in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood. While some decorations are elaborate, the author is drawn to simpler, cheaper ones like severed fingers, scattered bones, Caution! tape, or rubber rats. These simple gestures highlight overlooked additions to the built and natural environment. The author, who has lived in Avondale since 2012, took these photos over the past five years. They’ve been mindful of privacy and tend to zoom in rather than photograph entire houses.
