In 2013, I was broke, living in Los Angeles, and going through a terrible breakup. It was probably one of the darkest times in my life and I felt inconsolable. I wasn’t working. I wasn’t eating. I wasn’t drinking. I wasn’t doing much of anything except writing depressing songs and listening to even more depressing ones from my youth. I found it curious that the bands that got me through the general malaise of being a sad teenage goth served as a type of sonic comfort food for me as an even sadder adult. Was I having a midlife crisis?

Nick Cave was a particular go-to for me during that time, and he became the musical equivalent to my grandmother’s lasagna. I devoured his music and binge listened for months. It was familiar and comforting; I thought whatever feeling emotional eaters gained from consuming a pint of ice cream, I got from blasting “Your Funeral…My Trial.” As heartbroken as I was, I reminded myself that Nick Cave had been through much worse. I wondered what he did during those trying times and found myself unconsciously doodling pictures of him weeping while eating. Each day the drawings got a little weirder and my mood got a little better. Eventually, these drawings became a zine, and that zine has now became this cookbook.

Comfort Eating with Nick Cave: Vegan Recipes to Get Deep Inside of You is dedicated to anyone nursing a broken heart, a beer, and a burrito. Come for my illustrations of a weeping Nick Cave shoving funeral potatoes in his mouth. Stay for the incredibly tasty vegan recipes created by the inimitable Joshua Ploeg.

Nom nom nom. Boo hoo hoo.
